Sale Grammar School

Project Information
Project:
Sale Grammar School, Manchester
Client:
K Pendlebury & Sons Ltd
Scope of project:
School rooflight replacement as part of a roof refurbishment
em.line gable-ended ridgelight, em.line monopitch, em.dome and em.glaze hip-ended lantern light

The Challenge

We were approached by Sale Grammar School to supply and install a variety of different rooflights for an extensive roof refurbishment project. This involved replacing all existing rooflights with something new and aesthetically pleasing, yet economical. We had two goals, the first was to flood the learning environment with daylight, which helps increase concentration, and therefore improves results, as well as being essential for creating a feeling of wellbeing and positivity among staff and students. The second was to adhere to a strict budget, a common factor among projects undertaken within the education sector.

The Solution

The expert team at Whitesales recommended and supplied six em.line monopitches, an em.line gable-ended ridgelight and an eye-catching hip-ended lantern light, all of which combined to maximise natural light within the school corridors and markedly improve the learning environment.

Durable structured multiwall polycarbonate was chosen as a cost-effective material, whilst having minimal impact on the building structure and maintaining good light transmission and thermal efficacy, thereby reducing heating, lighting and power costs. In certain key areas of the school, we opted for glass over polycarbonate to compliment the existing design aesthetic.

The Benefits

It has been proven that children who study in well-lit classrooms receive test scores 15% higher than those with little or no natural daylight. We were therefore pleased to enable the school to maximise daylight while sticking to their budget, and ultimately reducing heating costs in the long run. The new, improved rooflights have created a comfortable, pleasant space for both pupils and teachers to work in.
